Purpose: Community Service and Promoting Local AgricultureThe following was written about one of the projects undertaken yearly by the North Pole Grange #6: First Friday Art Shows – Averages 100+ per show. This event is operated by a local watercolor club that meets weekly at the Grange. The following is the article about it that ran in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner: Santa’s Teeny Weeny Elf-Sized Art Show Dec. 7 The most famous resident of North Pole, Santa Claus, is incredibly busy this time of year. He not only has to figure out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but he has to go through all the tedious regulatory rigmarole of obtaining travel permits, filing flight plans, meeting DEC, EPA, EEOC, FCC, DOT and other three-letter regulations and getting all the necessary licenses. Then there are those health permits and emission permits for Donner and Blitzen and the rest of the gang, and standing in line to get the proper FAA clearance for the sleigh. And now passports. The other day I was in the post office and I think I spotted him in the passport renewal line. But, despite his hectic schedule, Santa has had time to be the official sponsor of an upcoming art event bearing his name. Santa’s Art Show, which is officially recognized by Mayor Doug Isaacson, will be the North Pole Art Society’s December First Friday show. Organizers declare it will be a jolly event displaying an impressive grouping of local art—in miniature. It will be a great place to get a unique gift for someone special. All artists are invited to participate in the all-media event. The show will take place Dec. 7 and will feature “itty bitty, teeny weeny, elf-sized paintings.” However, since Santa has decreed he only wants elf-sized paintings, submissions shouldn’t be any bigger than an eighth sheet, or, about 8”x10”. | “So, get those little brushes out and get busy,” said organizer Sandra Giddings. All First Fridays are at the North Pole Grange which has been fitted with great lighting and is a spacious, beautiful gallery. Follow the signs off Santa Claus Lane. Members of Watercolor Wednesday, which is an offshoot of the North Pole Art Society, can display and sell their paintings at no charge. Non-members will be charged the itty bitty entrance fee of $5. Membership to Watercolor Wednesday/North Pole Art Society is $25 year, which is a great deal for artists since a portion of the gallery is dedicated to members for showing their work during the First Fri-day events. Membership also allows artists to participate in the weekly Watercolor Wednesday painting sessions and to get discounts on workshops. Santa’s Art Show should be a grand, you-don’t-want-to-miss-it event. Refreshments, of course, will be served and they say it will be more than warm milk, stale cookies and carrots for the reindeer.
